The Atlantic Magazine App Reviews

High Five

After reading the reviews, I was expecting a piece of crap. To the contrary! This is a very logical application for thinking people like the readers of The Atlantic. Robust and reach. Great!

Never has an app been more ruined

Ive subscribed to The Atlantic for years; but the past few months, the experience of reading this app on iPhone and iPad has been excruciating and ultimately, futile. Is this a twisted plot to get digital readers back to print? If so, its not going to work. Im giving it another week and will then cancel. You had one job, Atlantic developers, and you failed completely.

You wont get digital access

Why cant the Atlantic programers figure out a way to have the app remember login and password between issues. And, if that is beyond their skills, why cant they test their app see how poorly it presents the "sign in" pages. HORRIBLE!!!

Great app.

Love this Megazine and every day enjoy amazingly immediately up-to-date articles on whatevers happening in the world. I check it every day

Not a good app

This one is very buggy and needs to go back to the design guys and gals.

Relatively good magazine reader

I am updating a review I wrote over a year ago, but I am keeping the old one because it is valid for older issues. The newer issues allow selecting text and using the iOS dictionary, plus there are other improvements. The magazine is no longer a "scan" of the print version, so it is faster, lighter and no ads. Also, the app now gives access to website content in addition to the magazine issues. I am happy with the app. Main thing that would be awesome is iOS sharing. For example, sharing to Instapaper would easily allow highlighting, and using sorting/tagging features of other apps. A search feature is also needed. Or, at the very least, categories for "stories" should go much further back. Otherwise, I have zero complaints, and the one-star reviews seem overly harsh. 2015 review valid for older issues: When compared with other magazine readers, this app is quite good. I much prefer it to reading the print, to which I used to subscribe. It reproduces the print version as much as practical and yet is nicely adapted and even enhanced for the iPad. Allowing access to dictionaries would be an even nicer enhancement, but my other magazine readers likewise do not allow that, or text selection. Also, Id like to be able to clip to Evernote or at least bookmark favorite articles. Not sure why there are so many criticisms but my guess is they are due to memory issues (magazines are big), so maybe close other apps. The app never crashed for me. Also, double-tap the page and pinch to zoom to the font size of your desire.

Not as bad as people portray it to be

**UPDATE** 4 star app Ive been using it for a few days now. Good quality, reliable news. The media makes up for the lack of ago organization. I havent encountered any glitches yet. 3 star app I got the app a minute ago. I tested the main features and looked for bugs incase I wanted to delete it. It said an update was accessible an I downloaded it. Its well organized, but the app does its job. I have no make concerns so far. Maybe the update helped. I may update this depending on my experience with the app.

Ridiculously Unusable App

Ive always felt the app was poorly designed and difficult to navigate, the design recently got worse, and now it is a mess of glitchiness. Great publication. Abysmal app.

Scaling on iPhone 6 Plus problem

Words are blurred

Love it!

Nice and reliable in news presentation, and laudably unbiased in analyzing different issues.

Review of App, not Content

As the title indicates, this review is only about the App (on iPad Air 2). Too often when I try to start reading at the same point I left off, the App goes to its logo page which not only forces me to click "read", but after doing that, I am put back on the table of contents. So I have scroll past articles that I had already read (or decided not to read) to find the article I want to continue to read. Sometimes if I left off in the midst of the article, I am returned to the start of the article which means remembering where I stopped and scrolling to the correct page. This review is intended more for The Atlantics IT department than to readers. My hope is a 1 Star review would get someones attention.

Worst Ive ever seen

This app is the absolute worst piece of garbage that Ive ever seen. Like a first-gen app made by a high-school student. Dont waste your time. Unbelievable.

You Need the Print Edition Label to Login? Seriously?

I cant speak to the quality of this app, because I cant yet use it. Sure, I became a subscriber several days ago, but Im still not worthy to read the magazine online. That wont happen until the first print issue lands in my mailbox. Why? Because a username and password--you, know, the system that every other business in the world uses--isnt good enough for the Atlantic. Instead you have to use the individualized code number that appears on the magazines mailing label. In essence, a reader is actually penalized for purchasing a print subscription.

Content Superb & App v.4 Improvement

This magazine is one of the best in the world. What other news sources give one the rage of the best intellectual reasoning from such a wide spectrum of political thought--David Frum to Ta-Nehisi Coates! The content is broad in terms of issues and timely with its reporting. A good daily read. The Atlantic.app is solid. Limited in features but more features than one could get from hard copy. Democracy cannot exist without a quality and mediated press. This magazine by virtue of its integrity and scope needs the support of all Americans as it is integral to the nobler functions of our government for and by the people. Please support and READ it. wh

Doesnt work

I dont like to be negative, but all the hate this app receives is on firm ground. The developer is not following app developer guidelines, specifically those regarding accessibility. Its clear that this developer has never tested SpeakScreen or any other accessibility function

Horrendous app

Amazing brilliant publication being firewalled from readership by Luddite technology. I think Ive found the REAL reason for the decline in the magazine business. I once found a search bar on the site; for the life of me I cant duplicate that again. And if I have to login one more time..... Please get your act together Mr. Goldberg, Im sure you have a full plate, but dont waste the talents of Brownstein, Fallows et al by hiding them behind such a surreally bad-you-realize-were-past-2.0-level-tech app like this. Im Exploring other aggregators to see if they carry The Atlantic.

5-Star Content

The content is marvelous. The app is well designed. I particularly like the ability to select subject matter, e.g., technology, across issues. I havent seen this capability in other similar apps. Well done. 5 stars.

Worst periodical app ever

I have two print subscriptions, for my son and myself, and yet I am unable to access the magazine through the app, which is BY FAR the worst app Ive downloaded- or in Atlantics case, TRIED to download. Each time I try to use this app Im asked to PAY for access to the current (or any) issue. When I click that Im already a subscriber Im told I have access, then I get sent back to the beginning of the process; its a constant loop. I called customer service and was told theyve gotten a lot of complaints just like mine- so why the hell cant they fix it?! Atlantic needs to study the New Yorker playbook!

Utter garbage

This app is the absolute worst piece of garbage that Ive ever seen. Almost like a first-gen app made by a high-school student. Dont waste your time.

Poor app

Paid for a subscription, app will not deliver content in any consistent way. Seems like problems other similar apps had 4-5 years ago. Still stuck in the past with the Atlantic.
